Internet Peering

The internet is a vast network of interconnected computer networks. But how exactly does data travel between all these different networks? This happens via what is known as internet peering.

Peering is a voluntary agreement between two IP networks to exchange traffic directly.

Imagine it like two highways connecting directly, instead of traffic needing to go through a roundabout to get from one side to the other.

Peering allows for a more efficient flow of data, which can improve internet speeds and performance for users.

There are two main types of peering:

Public peering: This happens at an internet exchange point (IXP). An IXP is a physical location where many networks come together to exchange traffic. It’s like a giant internet junction where data can be efficiently routed.

Private peering: This is a direct connection between two networks, often used for private data exchange or for networks with a lot of traffic between them.

Why is Peering Important?

Peering plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of the internet. Here are benefits of Cell-O’s peering services: –

  • Improved Performance: Peering reduces reliance on third-party networks, leading to faster data transfer and lower latency (delay) for users.
  • Reduced Costs: By directly exchanging traffic, networks can avoid paying transit fees to other networks for carrying their data.
  • Increased Efficiency: Peering helps to decongest internet backbones, leading to a more efficient overall flow of data.
  • Content Availability: Peering agreements between ISPs and CDNs ensure users have faster access to content like streaming videos and social media.
